Air Crew training

The project offers training related activities which will help to develop common aircrew training standards and to improve levels of tactical competence (e.g. night flight competence) and their flight safety skills, as well as creating the possibility for professional operational cooperation during Joint Operations.
The following trainings were developed and conducted for Air-Crews of the Border Guard Services of the MS/SAC:
Air – Naval coordination training:
- to enhance cooperation between Air-crews and Naval staff during Joint Operations.
Crew Exchange and Crew Resource Management:
- to ensure cooperation within Air-crews on European and national level (capacity building)
FLIR training:
- Operational training to operate a thermal (infrared) imaging device attached to helicopters
Mountainous and Sea Survival training:
- training for air crews how to survive after a crash in different environments as a part of the training on
Night Vision Goggles basic and advanced training:
- for reaching competence to be fully operational to fly during night time and severe weather conditions
The air crew training was planned and carried out in 2 phases.
Phase one:
In 2007 and 2008 27 air crew training related activities were organized and carried out by Frontex for 235 officers from Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta Portugal and Spain.
The 2nd phase of the project started in 2009 with the participation of Member States of the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea region such as Austria, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, together with Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain.
A total of 40 training activities will be provided in 2009 for 330 participants in the above mentioned fields of training for Air Crew members.
In order to ensure the harmonization of the preparation of Air Crew members of the MS/SAC Frontex is creating a common training manual for Joint Operations to ensure a common level of knowledge and competence of the officers concerned.
For the sake of ensure the highest standard possible; Frontex Training Unit leads meetings with commanding officers of the air squadrons of the MS/SAC in order to define training needs and contents.
