RABIT OPERATION - SITUATIONAL UPDATE

Warsaw, 12 January 2011 - On the basis of operational data gathered during the implementation of Operation RABIT, Frontex confirms further decreases in the number of irregular migrants detected at the Greek-Turkish land border.

FRONTEX RABIT DEPLOYMENT TO GREECE EXTENDED UNTIL MARCH 2011

Warsaw, December 7, 2010 — Frontex Executive Director Ilkka Laitinen signed a decision on December 3 authorising an extension of the Agency’s deployment of Rapid Border Intervention Teams (RABITs) to the Greek-Turkish land border.

FRONTEX ESTIMATES ILLEGAL BORDER CROSSINGS ON THE GREEK TURKISH BORDER HAVE DIMINISHED BY 44% BY THE END OF NOVEMBER

ATHENS, 30 November 2010 – On the basis of operational data gathered during the deployment of the Rapid Border Intervention Teams (RABIT 2010), Frontex estimates that at the end of November 2010 there has been an overall decrease of 43,7% in the number of irregular migrants intercepted at the Greek-Turkish land border, in comparison to the figures for October, when the highest number of arrivals for the year was registered. On October there were 7586 persons detected at the Greek Turkish land border and as of 29 November 4270 had crossed this month.

PAPOUTSIS, BESSON, MALMSTRÖM AND LAITINEN VISIT RABIT OPERATIONAL AREA

Orestiada, November 5 — Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Christos Papoutsis, French Minister of Immigration Éric Besson and Frontex Executive Director Ilkka Laitinen accompanied European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström on a visit to the Greek-Turkish land border today to meet members of the Rapid Border Intervention Team (RABIT) deployed by Frontex at the request of the Greek government.

MORE RABIT OFFICERS AND EQUIPMENT ARRIVE IN GREECE

Warsaw, November 3 — On the third day of the first Frontex-coordinated deployment of Rapid Border Intervention Teams (RABITs), 80 new Guest Officers arrived in the Orestiada area of north-eastern Greece to complement the personnel already in place. The newly-arrived officers will be briefed jointly today by Frontex and Greek authorities prior to commencing duty tomorrow morning.

FRONTEX TO DEPLOY 175 SPECIALIST BORDER-CONTROL PERSONNEL TO GREECE

Warsaw 29 October - Five days after receiving a request from Greece for deployment of Rapid Border Intervention Teams (RABITs), Frontex has finalised arrangements for human and technical resources to be deployed to the Greek-Turkish land border in the region of Orestiada and neighbouring areas. In total, 175 border-control specialists have been made available by the 26 Member States and Schengen-Associated Countries participating in the first ever RABIT deployment.
